I speak with several network marketers on a daily basis about ways to grow their home business and get better results when contacting cold leads. I always ask them to prospect me and run through what they plan on saying when they get a lead on the phone.
Out of 10 people I run through this exercise with it almost always ends up the same. They all start the conversation the same way...
"Hello is Joe Prospect There?"
"Hi Joe Prospect, this is Bill Prospector and I'm giving you a call today because you requested information about starting a home based business"
So you might be asking yourself, "What is wrong with that... Sounds pretty straightforward."
Well, here is the deal. Unless you are generating your own home business leads using a program like MyCaptureSystem than you must understand that the leads you are calling don't have a clue who you are and most people don't like other people (especially people they don't know) telling them what they have done. You also need to understand that they are probably being approached from at least a few other people who are also trying to recruit them and you need to stand out from the crowd.
Instead of telling them what they did and why your calling them, why don't you pose a question that will either peak their interest or get them to kindly turn down your offer so you don't waste anymore time with them.
Make a goal to NOT sound like a telemarketer and instead sound like a friend who is giving them a call from down the street.
Here is an example:
"Hi Joe?"
"Hey Joe... Bill Prospector here. Joe I wanted to give you a quick courtesy call this afternoon to find out if you were still interested in making an extra $500 to $5000 a month from home or if your current job was already doing that for you? (Pause for response) Do you have a couple of minutes?"
You will notice that I didn't put Joe on the spot and I didn't sound like a telemarketer... I also posed a question that almost demands a positive response that goes in my favor.
Here is something you can do the next time you working cold leads. Try the first approach for 50 leads then try the second approach with 50 leads and see what one gets you foot in the door the most.
